Welcome to Grades 5 & 6!

Grades 5 & 6 mark a season of “being called up” within a secure and nurturing environment. Through corporate Bible study in the morning and practical application throughout the day, we encourage our students to show love and respect for each other and themselves. Instead of teacher-enforced organization, our students in grades 5 & 6 learn self-organization: students learn how to take personal responsibility for quality of work, time management, and class participation. Students also adjust from having one instructor for all core subjects to being taught by a team of teachers. Students leave Grade 6 feeling more secure in their identity and ready for the challenges of junior high.

CLCS Pat LytleMrs. Pat Lytle is a seasoned teacher with many years of experience as a classroom teacher in third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade, as well as a Physical education teacher for grades K-8.

Pat is part of the pastoral team at Reach Out for Christ Church serving as a  professional life coach and pastoral counselor. She is passionate about education and helping people of all ages move forward into their God given destiny and purpose.

Pat lives in Freeville and has two adult children. Her son Andrew is married and working for Sony in San Diego, and her daughter Elizabeth recently graduated from RIT and is currently living in Freeville.

During morning Bible class, we have the opportunity to corporately focus on God and gain insight into the messages given to us through His word. As we read God’s word together, we learn to use study tools such as a concordance. We enjoy discussing the significance of Scripture verses and how they apply to daily life. Students work together to memorize passages throughout the year and to share praise and prayer requests.

In English Language Arts, students enjoy discovering several ways to communicate through words. Our reading explorations dovetail with World Studies through various written works including historical novels and cultural tales. World Studies also provides themes for writing and research.

The writing process and six traits are used continually throughout the year in a variety of projects including, but not limited to, public speaking and literature circles.

Students in Grades Five and Six continue to enhance their English Language Arts basics throughout the year via systematic studies of vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics.

Mathematics 5

Students are encouraged to actively participate in acquiring new skills and developing confidence through problem solving, self-discovery and direct teacher instruction. On any given day, we introduce a concept and its related vocabulary, work collaboratively on problems to practice what we have learned, then work independently to help determine levels of mastery. Topics are reinforced through hands-on activities, technology, and daily leveled homework.

We focus on areas such as:

1) Extending multiplication and division to larger numbers and integrating decimals into those operations

2) Developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and introducing multiplication and division of fractions

3) Increasing an understanding of geometry, especially in graphing points on the coordinate plane, classifying two-dimensional figures based on their properties, and developing an understanding of volume.

Mathematics 6

In sixth grade math, the students begin a new curriculum that continues through eighth grade. We examine many concepts including fractions, decimals, linear equations, geometry, and proportions. Students are introduced to a concept in class and work through examples for understanding. Daily homework is assigned to supplement the class work. We use hands-on activities and manipulatives to enhance the textbook lessons.

Acknowledging God as the Lord of time and cultures, Grades Five and Six explore World Studies in a two year cycle, Eastern and Western Hemisphere alternatively.

We explore the cultures of the societies that laid the foundations of our current civilizations and investigate each continent’s unique geography and peoples and their contributions to the world community. We also explore emerging nations and cultures, and the expansion of technology and revolutions throughout the world.

As we study the Western Hemisphere students research Canadian provinces, U.S. States, and South American countries, compiling reports of specific selections. Through the study of the Eastern Hemisphere, students write about Greek and Roman influences, as well as Eurasian and African cultures.

Spanish 5

Grade 5 students receive a foundation for reading and writing in Spanish. In this grade, students begin to make the transition from familiarity to proficiency with vocabulary such as colors, days of the week, and numbers. They learn to spell and write new vocabulary and have the opportunity to show off their skills through poetry, pen pal letters, and other creative class projects. At the same time, we start conversation development as students learn to talk about themselves and how to inquire about others. These skills are sharpened through role-playing activities and class presentations.

In the classroom, our students receive a foundation for reading and writing in Spanish. For example, our food vocabulary lessons are typically accompanied by fun kitchen activities such as preparing a dish from a Spanish speaking country, such as Tostones from Puerto Rico or homemade salsa and guacamole for a school-wide Cinco de Mayo celebration.

Spanish 6

Our Grade 6 students learn how to describe and ask about others. We also introduce grammar techniques necessary for discussing future plans and past experiences. They learn how to extend invitations and how to respond appropriately. Our students use vocabulary review games, written and verbal dialogue, and other comprehension skill-building exercises. For example, our food vocabulary lessons are typically accompanied by fun kitchen activities such as preparing a dish from a Spanish speaking country, such as Tostones from Puerto Rico or homemade salsa and guacamole for a school-wide Cinco de Mayo celebration.
